Re: Brother Wolf's invitation to post...
My involvement with storytelling links to childhood listening to family stories. Gosh my Mom and Aunts and Uncles have good memories! My maternal grandparents were from Tennessee/Kentucky. They passed on stories they had learned as well as great reminisces. When I became an early childhood educator I enjoyed storytelling with children and looked for ways to increase my ability. My start was a story I heard from my Mom who had heard it from her Ma or Papa when she was young (Epamandus). Then. about 18 years ago, I was conversing with Bill (Will) Grant, a colleague at Keene State College in Keene, NH. I was telling him about my excitement about storytelling and he proposed we start a conference. Well it worked out very well. Although Bill left the college a few years later he was a huge help getting it going. We now have have held 16 New England Conferences on Storytelling for Children. It is an informal, warm and fun day-long conference in the Spring. We have been fortunate to have many very extraordinary and generous tellers.
Since I retired 2 years ago, the future of this conference is in limbo. I hope we'll be able to continue. Meanwhile, I am an enthusiastic story listener and sometimes teller to small children.
Glad to be part of this group.
Best,
Mary Mayshark-Stavely
